What is a

Seed Bank?

Open file cabinet drawer labeled 'beans' filled with papers. File cabinets in the background labeled 'tomatoes' and 'cherry tomatoes'.

A seed bank is a place where seeds are stored carefully to keep their genetic variety safe for the future. These seeds act as backups to protect plants from dangers like climate change, disasters, or human impact.

Having a dedicated seed bank for the area of Charlotte, North Carolina is crucial for the future of food sovereignty. The seeds in the Charlotte Seed Bank have genetics passed down through each generation that tell future plants how to thrive and produce at peak efficiency for all Charlotte growers - small and large.

But Why Seeds?

As of Q4 2025, the Charlotte Seed Bank is at 94% large seed company donations, and 6% local donations.
